Xserve is an ideal platform for deploying powerful web solutions easily, reliably and affordably. With robust server-optimized hardware, a UNIX-based operating system and support for the latest Internet and security standards, Xserve is equipped to handle everything from hosting dynamic, high-traffic websites to powering three-tier web applications and database-driven web services.
Affordable, high-density Xserve hardware makes it easy to scale your web solution to meet the needs of your business. Adding more servers increases the performance and redundancy of your deployment ideal for handling additional traffic and providing high-availability services.
High-Performance Web Hosting
Xserve includes an optimized Apache web server for hosting secure, high-performance websites right out of the box. A powerful front-end caching system speeds up the Apache Servers delivery of static content, such as HTML pages and images. This in turn allows Xserve to provide more than 5,000 hits per second in WebBench 4.1. Thats enough to saturate three T3 lines, or an OC3 line, at more than 130 megabits per second. Depending on how you configure the server, each website can have a different domain name (using virtual domains) and even a different IP address.
Integrated support for Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) enables secure high-grade 128-bit encryption and authentication of transactions (public key infrastructure (PKI) using X.509 digital certificates), providing the ironclad security you need for e-commerce websites. This high-grade security architecture protects credit card information and other confidential personal and business data transmitted during web transactions. And perhaps best of all, Apple has added an intuitive user interface to Apache that makes it the easiest way ever to set up, deploy and monitor your websites.
Standards-Based Web Applications and Services
With a robust Java 2 implementation optimized for server use and full support for JSPs, Java Servlets and SOAP, Xserve with Mac OS X Server is the fastest way to deploy standards-based web applications and web services. Xserve makes it affordable too, with the built in WebObjects 5.2 deployment software and unlimited runtime license. Apples powerful three-tier J2SE application server, WebObjects provides a flexible application deployment platform with support for popular J2EE technologies, including Servlets, Object Request Brokers (ORBs) and Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) containers.
All of the components necessary to host high-performance J2EE-based applications including JBoss, Apache Tomcat, and Apache Axis are also included with Mac OS X Server. Together they support enterprise-class application services such as Enterprise Java Beans (EJB), Java Message Services (JMS), XML-based web services, and Java Database Connectivity (JDBC). With the inclusion of Apache Axis, Mac OS X Server supports SOAP and WSDL Web Services standards for exchanging data among distributed applications.
Enterprise-Class Solutions
The open source, UNIX foundation of Apples operating system makes it easy for developers to port their existing enterprise database and UNIX server applications for deployment on Xserve. In fact, tens of thousands of UNIX developers are already turning to Mac OS X to combine the performance and reliability of a UNIX-based platform with Apples innovation and ease of use.
| Web Server Features | |
|---|---|
| Apache 1.3 - 2.0 web server | Provides reliable, high-performance delivery of static and dynamically generated web content. |
| Virtual hosting | Allows you to host multiple websites on a single server. |
| SSL support | Extends the capabilities of the HTTP protocol to provide web-based file services for collaborative web publishing and content management. |
| Webmail | Provides browser-based mail services that can be customized to fit the look and feel of any website. |
| WebDAV | Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning provides enhancement to the HTTP protocol which turns a website into a document database that enables collaborative creation, editing, and searching from remote locations. |
| WebObjects Application Server | Allows you to deploy cross-plaform web applications and standards-based web services with no user license fees. |
| Server-side authoring support | Allows you to use Internet-standard tools and protocols, such as Apache modules, PHP, MySQL, Ruby, Python, Perl and UNIX and Mac CGIs scripts to create dynamic web solutions. |
| J2EE, JBOSS | The components necessary to host high-performance J2EE-based applications including JBoss, Apache Tomcat, and Apache Axis are included. |
| Support for Java Servlets, JSP | Enables you to deploy platform-independent middleware solutions and generate platform-independent web content. |
| IP failover | Increases service availability when deploying two or more servers: if one server fails, the second server can take over the IP address and deliver services for the failed server. |
| MYSQL included; ODBC, JDBC | Link your site to a database using the included MySQL database; ODBC and JDBC database connectivity is also supported. |
| Remote monitoring and management | Server Admin provides secure remote monitoring of your Apache server and website traffic. Supports the Common and Extended Log Formats. |
